About

Theodoor Akkerboom graduated in September 2022 with a Master’s degree in Biosystems Engineering from Wageningen University. During his master’s program, he developed multi-object tracking and keypoint detection algorithms for robotic systems used in the automatic harvesting of tomatoes. After graduating, he pursued a two-year Engineering Doctorate (EngD) at Wageningen University, where he researched and applied deep regression and segmentation models using RGB and multispectral imaging to predict bycatch survival in beam trawl fisheries.

In September 2025, he began his PhD at the QurAI group under the supervision of Prof. Clarisa Sánchez, focusing on the automatic construction of radiology draft reports from CT scans of oncology patients. During his PhD, he will address challenges related to organ and lesion instance segmentation, the use of prior scans as additional information, and the comparison of the draft reports with those written by radiologists. His PhD is conducted in collaboration with the startup Plain Medical in Nijmegen and is part of the AI4AI consortium.
